His parents had settled in Shell in 1900, on what is now known as the Kedesh Ranch. Jack was raised on the ranch and attended school in Greybull for one year. Because of his mother’s health, the family moved to Arizona where he attended school and graduated from high school in Glendale. Following his father’s death, Jack and his mother returned to Greybull to be close to his two sisters, Anna Blakesley and Myrtle Good. He joined the Navy during World War II and served from 1942-1945. In 1950, Jack enlisted in the Army and served during the Korean Conflict and Vietnam War. He retired from the military in 1970 after serving for 28 years. After retiring from the Army, Jack enrolled in the Diablo Valley College in California and worked for PG&E as a line camp cook throughout San Francisco and Fresno for 12 years before retiring for good. Jack married Betty Durtsche in Avenal, Calif., on Nov. 10, 1991. The two had been sweethearts in the 1940s and reunited in 1990. The couple alternated residences between Basin and Avenal before moving to Basin permanently in 1998. He enjoyed yard work, gardening and keeping up on current events. He never met a stranger and enjoyed life. He loved sharing his sense of humor with everyone, whether or not they were willing. He will be greatly missed. His parents; one brother, Steve Jones; four sisters, Myrtle Good, Anna Blakesley, Viola Grael and Ada Jones, and his stepdaughter, Effel Rea, preceded him in death.
